How One Dreamer Found A Home at CCSU

News

by Cindy Pena

Jose Diaz goes through the same struggles as any college student at Central Connecticut State University; manages to keep his grades up, stresses over finals and pays for the increasing cost of tuition.

However, he faces one constant struggle many students cannot relate to: he is undocumented.

Diaz is in the U.S. on a work permit and protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, an immigration program that protects people who came into the U.S. as children. 16,000 individuals live under DACA in Connecticut. Only 18 percent have a high school diploma and are enrolled in college.

Although he is protected from deportation, he still fears for other undocumented individuals.

The Central Connecticut State University Women’s soccer team fell 2-1 to conference opponent Saint Francis on Friday in the Northeast Conference Semifinals. The Blue Devils pushed for a comeback late but fell short. They finished the season 10-8 with a 6-2 record in the NEC. All six of their conference wins were consecutive.

The game was scoreless until the second half. The Red Flash got on the board in minute 56. Midfielder Mariana Jaleca scored from inside the box into the left side of the net, her second goal of the season. Alyssa McGhee provided the assist. Saint Francis scored again just ten minutes later in minute 66 when Gabi Morales scored off a corner kick for her seventh goal of the season. These are the first goals Central’s Ashley Cavanaugh gave up since Oct. 1. She recorded six straight shutouts in this span.

Central’s lone goal came in minute 84 when freshman forward Jenna Rae Covello found a through pass in the box. It was her fifth goal of the season. Laura Casanovas Diaz provided the assist, her third of the season.

The Blue Devils’ 10-8 record is their best since 2014. During their six-game win streak they outscored opponents 13-0. Numerous players earned awards as well.

Student Debt: A Harsh Reality for CCSU Students

Opinion

by Cindy Pena

Many students go into college hoping that getting a degree is going to help them succeed in the real world. However, when they graduate and face the reality of the real world, they end up carrying the baggage of student debt.

This baggage limits students after graduation, as they are desperately searching for a well-paying job. The truth is, it can take several months to land a job after college.

Yet, students have to start paying back their loans shortly after graduation. At Central Connecticut State University, the harsh reality of student debt does not go unrecognized.

The 2017 study done by CCSU’s Office of Institutional Research and Assessment suggests that the number of graduates who owe money for student loans is increasing.
